WANDA CARROLL OWENS WILLIS -- HAYSI
September 09, 2025

Wanda Carroll Owens Willis, 83, of Haysi passed into the arms of the angels on September 7, 2025 after a long courageous battle with cancer. Born April 24, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Melford and Myrtle (Ramey) Owens of Haysi. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Milford Wayne Owens.
Left to mourn her loss are her children, Carolea (Jerry) Newsome, Haysi and Phillip Dwayne (Sherry) Willis, Breaks; six cherished grandchildren, Miranda (Will) Newsome, Meadowview, Shaun (Kasey) Newsome, Clintwood, Tonya Dawson, Nadia (Shane) Carroll, Pittsburgh, Pa., Ivana Dawson, Blacksburg, and Ava (Billy) Allen, Seattle, Wa.; three great-grandchildren, who were the joy of her heart, Rylee, Haylee, and Wyatt Newsome. Her precious fur baby Raven, who was her constant companion for the past five years.
Wanda (Nannie) lived her entire life at Doe Branch in Haysi. She raised her children there, worked with her brother and parents in their store at the mouth of the hollow and cared for her parents and brother until each went home to be with the Lord.
She worked at Hancock-Lambert Pharmacy in Clintwood for nineteen years. She was so proud of the work she did there and loved her job. She retired at 76 due to health reasons but would have worked longer if she was able. Her boss Rexx Baker was so good to her and he and his wife, Donna became her second family.
There is so much we could say about our Nannie. She was a worker, a warrior, and a pillar of the community around Doe Branch. She was an amazing cook and loved to decorate her home and yard for each season and holiday. She was the center of our family till the end and loved each of us unconditionally.
We all loved her so much and will miss her every day but we know she is home with Jesus and with her precious mother, daddy, and Wayne. Rest our sweet Nannie till we get there to see you again. Until then we will carry the love you gave us in our hearts.
Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 10, 2025 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Eddie Newsome, Buster Mullins and Jim Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in the Mullins Cemetery, Haysi. Pallbearers will be Rexx Baker, Denver Stiltner, Shaun Newsome, Jerry Newsome, Will Deel and Nolan Deel.
